In a recent interview with Minister Lindiwe Sisulu on SABC TV she called for houses to be built speedily.

Now this does not mean cheap and nasty but providing accommodation for the poor far in a more efficient manner with housing that can be far more solid than currently is being done.

This arises from the Covid-19 situation where the current shack housing simply does not suit the social distancing requirements. While the minister’s statement was intended to show intent we urge the minister to consider beyond bricks and mortar to more sustainable housing like timber, already in the DHS Red Book, as timber offers many advantages – one being prefabrication off site and assembly on site within a week.

Food for thought. Is this affordable housing? Perhaps not, but if Covid-19 has taught us anything it is not to differentiate between the haves and the have-nots.
